Surround Speaker Check 2.3 Adds New Subwoofer Test Suite

Surround Speaker Check version 2.3 introduces a new Subwoofer Test Suite section of the app where users gain access to new features and test tracks tailored for evaluating home theater low end performance. The Subwoofer Test Suite includes a Manual Frequency Test feature for use in testing subwoofer performance and evaluating room acoustical response, while the Epic Bass Demo Tracks page offers five unique Dolby Atmos tracks designed to let you hear the full capabilities of your subwoofer.

Manual Frequency Test

The Manual Frequency Test feature allows users to select a specific frequency they can play back as pure 32-bit sine wave as a means for evaluating subwoofer range and frequency response. The test can also be used as an aid for helping determine the optimal frequency crossover point in a home theater’s bass management system.

The Manual Frequency Test provides distortion free, uncompressed PCM 32-bit audio

For best audio quality, the Manual Frequency Test in Surround Speaker Check harnesses the power of the Apple TV’s powerful custom CPU to calculate and process the sine wave in real time in order to provide distortion-free, uncompressed PCM audio for testing.

Epic Bass Demo Tracks

Surround Speaker Check version 2.3 introduces five new Dolby Atmos test tracks designed to showcase the full capabilities of your subwoofer! Track descriptions:

  • “Modern Kick”: This track features a rock-style beat focused around a punchy-sounding kick drum with puffy, yet modest sub-bass centering around 50 hz.

  • “Damage Plan”: Raw and edgy EDM-meets industrial track emulates sub-bass you might encounter in sci-fi or action movie soundtracks like The Matrix. A strong low frequency peak centered around 30 hz works to showcase the sub-bass capabilities of your subwoofer.

  • “String Theory”: In this orchestral-style soundtrack, classical bass and cello note octaves are split between low and upper-bass frequencies and on either side of the common 80 hz subwoofer crossover point. This makes the track a great way to subjectively examine the balance between crossover frequency setting and subwoofer volume as ideally, the sub-bass and upper bass note frequencies should compliment each other without one octave audibly overbearing the other.

  • “The Strangest Thing”: Classic retro synth meets modern fidelity as this sinister-sounding soundtrack features powerful low C and D notes with sub-bass extending below 30 hz. Not for the feint of heart, this track is meant to be felt as much as heard! (Volume discretion is advised.)

  • “Battle Stations”: Orchestral percussion and taiko drums combine to create a powerful action-style soundtrack test. In this example, the percussive punch of the drums largely emanate from the higher-register bass frequencies while the on-screen spectrum animation illustrates how drum resonance and note decay mildly settle into bass frequencies ranging from 30 hz to 100 hz
